Here are some things I like about tutoring. It is fun and education at the same time. My tutor helped me in spelling with educational games. With this help, my grades have gone up. My grades in reading have gone up. I’m also getting better at writing. That is what I like about tutoring.” -4th grade student

Reducing the risks facing children is a great challenge. Our Youth Development Program, opened in 2001, has continued to grow and thrive with promising results. The counseling program focuses on improving emotional, relational, and spiritual health of its young clients and thrives to restore effective communication within their families. The tutoring/mentoring component seeks to increase the self-worth and academic achievements of at-risk youth and focuses on helping these youth achieve success in terms of completing homework, studying for tests, improving grades, and fulfilling other curriculum requirements.

Many of the students we counsel struggle with learning disabilities, attention deficits, and behavioral difficulties that impede their academic performance.  These problems compound their mental health issues and decrease their feelings of self-worth.  Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry’s tutoring program offers academic assistance to students in grades K-12th who are currently participating in our counseling program.   Volunteer tutors are carefully matched with a student according to the child’s needs and the tutor’s grade preference and subject expertise.  They spend a minimum of one hour per week after school, one-on-one, assisting with homework assignments, providing remedial activities and instruction, and fostering good study habits.

We are currently seeking to add to our list of volunteer tutors for all grade levels and subjects.  If you are interested in making a difference in the life a child, please call or email Sandy Niekum at 412-366-1300 x.123

We are now accepting students for our Summer Tutoring Program. Call Sandy to register. Click here for a flyer with more details.
